How the vaccination works
At VaccinDirekt, we offer updated covid-19 vaccines and provide guidance, booking, and the correct dosing intervals ahead of the autumn and winter season. In line with recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the seasonal dose is primarily given to older adults and individuals at increased risk of severe illness.
Who should get vaccinated against covid-19?
People aged 75 and older, as well as those at increased risk of severe covid-19, are recommended to receive an annual dose starting September 1, 2025. Simultaneous vaccination with the seasonal flu vaccine is recommended before winter.
Other groups may be vaccinated following medical assessment or physician recommendation, according to national guidelines.
The vaccine is not recommended for
People with a severe allergy to any component of the vaccine (e.g. PEG) or those who have previously experienced a serious hypersensitivity reaction after a covid vaccine (medical assessment required).

Why it’s important to get vaccinated against covid-19
Covid-19 continues to show clear seasonal patterns in Sweden. Staying up to date with your seasonal dose reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and disruption to daily life - especially for older adults and those in medical risk groups.
Risk of severe complications
Covid-19 can cause pneumonia, blood clots, heart complications, and organ failure. Older adults and people with underlying health conditions are at particularly high risk of requiring hospital care.
Long-lasting symptoms - even after mild illness
Many people experience so-called long covid, with symptoms such as extreme fatigue, reduced concentration, and breathing difficulties that can persist for months.

Individuals with a high fever or acute infection should wait until they have recovered.
Children and young people without risk factors are generally not recommended to be vaccinated; vaccination may be given after individual medical evaluation.
You are always welcome to consult our nurses for personal advice.
When should you get vaccinated?
The best time to get your dose is in early autumn - ideally together with your flu vaccination - so that protection can build up before infection peaks in late autumn and winter. If you’re running late, get vaccinated anyway; protection increases significantly within the following weeks after the dose.
Vaccination schedule
Seasonal dose: one dose for people aged 75 and older, and for those in medical risk groups. Regional campaigns usually begin in October and may offer co-vaccination with the flu shot. Protection develops over the weeks following vaccination. EU health authorities update the vaccine composition each year to better match the circulating variants. Just like influenza, covid-19 spreads more easily when people spend more time indoors. This leads to more cases and greater pressure on healthcare - especially among older adults and those in risk groups.
Vaccination is the best protection
There is no guarantee of a mild illness, even for otherwise healthy individuals. Vaccination reduces the risk of severe disease, shortens recovery time, and helps ease the burden on healthcare services.
