Cholera vaccine

Medically reviewed

Last updated: 9 July 2026

Cholera is a contagious intestinal infection spread through contaminated water and food. The disease can cause severe diarrhea, dehydration and, in severe cases, can be life-threatening if left untreated. There are effective oral vaccines against cholera that provide good protection. The vaccine is recommended before travelling to areas with poor sanitation and may also offer some protection against traveller's diarrhoea caused by ETEC bacteria.

How the vaccination works

At VaccinDirekt, we offer two types of cholera vaccines, both taken orally. You can take the vaccine home with you, but it must be stored in a refrigerator. Avoid eating or drinking for one hour before and one hour after taking the vaccine.

Who should get vaccinated against cholera?

  • Travelers to areas where cholera is common, especially where drinking water and sanitation are poor.
  • Those planning to stay in rural areas or regions with uncertain water and food safety.

The vaccine is not recommended for:

  • People with known allergies to any component of the vaccine.
  • If you have an active, severe infection, vaccination should be postponed until recovery.
You are always welcome to get advice from our nurses.

When should you get vaccinated?

It’s important to plan your vaccination well in advance of your trip to ensure you have time to receive the required number of doses. One dose often provides basic protection, but for longer-lasting immunity, two doses are needed – and for young children up to five years old, three doses.

Vaccination schedule

There are two types of cholera vaccines:
  • A live attenuated vaccine taken as a single dose.
  • An inactivated vaccine taken in two doses for adults, and three doses for children aged 2–5 years.
Some vaccines must be mixed with bottled water and should be taken one hour before and one hour after without any other food or drink for best effect.

Why it is important to get vaccinated against cholera

Cholera can strike suddenly and cause severe diarrhea and dehydration – even during short trips. By getting vaccinated through VaccinDirekt, you reduce the risk of illness and can enjoy your journey without interruption.

The infection can be found where you least expect it

Contaminated drinking water or food are common sources of infection in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation. Even food that looks fresh may be contaminated.

Symptoms can be severe and prolonged

Cholera often causes intense diarrhea and a high risk of dehydration. Without rapid rehydration, the disease can become life-threatening.

Greater risk of a ruined vacation

Falling ill with cholera means not only physical suffering but also the risk of hospitalization, a disrupted trip, and extra expenses.

Prevention is better than treatment abroad

Access to proper healthcare and rehydration may be limited at your destination. Getting vaccinated before you travel is the most reliable protection.
